WebSporadic inclusion body myositis (IBM) is the most common muscle disease in the elderly. It is characterised by a distal and proximal myopathy, progressively leading to severe disability. Muscle biopsy shows abnormal muscle fibres containing vacuoles and typical filamentous inclusions, with lymphocytic inflammation. WebInclusion bodies are formed from partially folded protein intermediates and are composed of aggregates of mostly single types of polypeptide. This helps to isolate and purify the protein aggregates to homogeneity before solubilization and refolding. Proteins inside inclusion body aggregates have native-like secondary structures.
