Before the Famine, ¾ of the population of Cork city were paupers. By 1847 Ireland’s workhouses were bursting at the seams with a nationwide average weekly number of 83,283 inmates. Designed by the Poor Law Commissioners' architect George Wilkinson, the building was intended to accommodate 500 inmates.
