It would have to learn Ranks 1-4 first. Though I think if you have a high-level pet, you can just teach it Rank 5. It's been so long, I can't remember if you have HAVE to teach them all the ranks. At a certain point you will be generating more focus for your pet than it can spend (go for the throat talent + crit rating), so having bite in addition to gore is a positive thing overall for your pet's focus use efficiency.
